GOLF IN SOTOGRANDE

CLUB DE GOLF VALDERRAMA

One of the most famous courses in the world since the 1997 Ryder Cup, many golfers find it irresistable to play at least once. Dramatic, demanding, beautifully maintained but maybe a touch too hard at times? Make up your own mind. Book well ahead for tee times (none available in August when it is reserved for members).

Club de Golf Valderrama special green fees 01 October 2008 to 30 September 2009 £TBA Monday to Friday, £TBA weekends.

REAL CLUB DE GOLF SOTOGRANDE

Also known as Sotogrande Old Course - the original course in Sotogrande, membership is now highly sought after. Tee times are very limited so book well ahead. Classily understated and serene, especially compared to it's more brutal neighbour, this is a course to savour. However, like Valderrama, the course is immaculately maintained and they make a wonderful pair of courses to play side by side.

Real Club de Golf Sotogrande green fees 2009 £TBA.

ALMENARA GOLF COURSE

Sat alongside it's illustrious neighbours, Almenara may yet establish it's own reputation. It comprises 27 holes arranged as 3 9's around the superb 5 star Almenara Hotel. Dave Thomas has used the terrain and existing cork woods to maximum advantage while no expense has been spared to build lakes for other holes to wind around. This isn't an easy course, nor is it meant to be, but there is no doubting the quality. Even the practice facilities are impressive including a 90 bay driving range (21 of which are under cover), 2 swing analysis rooms and 3 full size practice holes. Finally, the terrace above the 9th green looking down over the course towards the sea has to be one of the best places for a cold beer in the whole of Sotogrande.

Almenara Golf Course special green fees 01 January to 29 February 2009, 01 June to 15 September 2009 and 11 November to 31 December 2009 £45 and 01 March to 31 May 2009 and 16 September to 10 October 2009 £62.

CLUB DE GOLF LA CANADA

This is the only municipal course on the Costa del Sol but it's well worth playing. The original 9 was designed by Robert Trent Jones and it has recently been extended to 18 holes with new impressive club house. The views are excellent from it's elevated position and the 9th is perhaps the most intimidating tee shot in Sotogrande! Increasingly popular so it's advisable to book tee times.

Club de Golf La Canada green fees 15 February to 31 May 2009 and 15 September to 31 November 2009 £48 and 01 January to 14 February 2009, 01 June to 15 September 2009 and 01 to 31 December 2009 £40.

LA RESERVA I

This is Sotogrande's latest course marking the development of the last third of the estate. No expense has been spared and Cabell Robinson was allowed over 70 hectares to create a long and spacious course that may one day rival it's famous neighbour, Valderrama and become one of the best in Europe. Membership will be restricted to 750 per course (a second is being designed by Gary Player as we speak).

Rights to Play are currently available at 60,000 Euros. Play it while you can as tee times for non-members will be increasingly restricted as membership increases.

La Reserva I special green fees 2009 £134.
